Beauty of the Khayelitsha Wetlands Park
This particular spot at the Khayelitsha Wetlands Park is surrounded by well-kept lawns, seemingly perfect for picnics. A little way away I could make out the faint laughter of kids playing on the jungle gyms, but here it was quite and serene - a lovely place to sit in the cool sunshine.

Cape Town's Winged Victory at the Cenotaph
The Cenotaph in Buitenkant Street (at the bottom of Adderley) is a memorial of those who died in the World Wars, as well as for those who died in the Korean war.

The Wikipedia page quotes South Africa's 1924 Governor-General, the first Earl of Athlone as stating:

"I cannot but believe that the existence of these visible memorials, which are to be found throughout the world – silent witnesses to the desolation of the war – will through the years to come, be potent advocates of peace and will eventually serve to draw all peoples together in mutual understanding."

I can say, that looking at these memorials up close, I can see exactly what he meant. Whether they'll have any effect on war-makers; of that I'm unconvinced.

(Oh, and in case you missed that... no, neither did I know that Athlone had Earls!)

The Barn in Khayelitsha
In my previous posts I showed a few photos taken from the viewing deck at Khayelitsha's Lookout Hill. This is a photo taken inside The Barn at the visitor's centre.

According to this article, "The Barn Khayelitsha is an incubator for entrepreneurs with a focus on tech and innovation, as well as empowering women in business and youth in tech.".

It isn't a huge facility, but it does have one or two large rooms with rows of computers, as well as a section with desks and meeting tables where entrepreneurs can come sit with their laptops and work on their projects. They offer free wifi, and even have a small kitchen for making tea and coffee.

I was surprised, and delighted, to find The Barn in such an impoverished community. Good on you CiTi!

Khayelitsha Girls
It's too small to read in this photo, but the badge on her top reads Pathfinder. I have no facts to back this (so correct me if I'm wrong) but the Pathfinders are probably similar to the Scouts of old, except possibly without the dubious heritage.

These three girls were super happy for me to take their photo. :)

Camps Bay volleyball last summer
How time flies. I was super busy in April and then I was off to India for a couple of weeks, so Cape Town Daily Photo has suffered a lack of daily photos for a while now. The contrast of the warm Indian climate against our present cold and wet weather is really making me miss summer... hence this photo (taken back in March) as a little reminder of summer. Enjoy!
