I normally don't enjoy cocktails because most tend to be fairly sweet and I generally don't enjoy overly-sweet drinks. Kerry-Anne and I ventured into Cubana in Green Point a few days ago and I ordered this piña colada - which, as it turns out has now become my go-to cocktail for when I don't feel like beer, wine or whiskey. It's not too sweet, contains pineapple, and isn't pink. ;)

About to Start a Party with J&B
You may have heard about the outrageous party that J&B's planning on hosting in Cape Town's Castle of Good Hope tomorrow. If not, I'm sure you'll remember the ad campaign for the last one - it was held on Mexico's Caribbean coast and the theme was Under the Mayan Sun. Remember? Didn't you wish you were there?
From what I've seen and read, tomorrow's J&B Start a Party party at the castle could be the biggest, most energetic and extravagant party that Cape Town has ever seen. Through some good fortune, Kerry-Anne and I were invited to the party. We'll driven from the Pepper Club hotel to the Castle; we'll be forced to party hard (how terrible); and then Road Trip will drive us back home in the early hours of the morning (assuming we've partied too much ;) )! Doesn't it sound awesome?!
I took this photo of a mixologist preparing one of the J&B cocktails designed especially for the party tomorrow. This one, called Ellicious, is made from J&B whisky (obviously!), peach schnapps, mango puree, lime juice, and pineapple juice. Doesn't that sound like one crazy-hardcore drink?
The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is a cocktail described in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as "the alcoholic equivalent to a mugging; expensive and bad for the head.". Apparently, drinking one is like "having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon, wrapped 'round a large gold brick."
Isn't that perfectly awful?
Kerry-Anne ordered this drink at Eastwoods Lounge, near Tyger Valley Center. She reported that the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster never had the alleged brain-smashing effect on her and was fairly tasty, albeit just a little too sweet for her liking.
Cocktails and canapés
I love that the sign-writer at Tequila Town used different colour chalk to write these cocktail names. Did you notice how cleverly they wrote "Passionate" in pink and "Azure" in blue? How about "Banana" in yellow and "Mango" in orange?
Cape Town seems to have a thing for cocktails. When we're not being rushed by crazy deadlines, we love leaving work early to find a place with a great sea view to enjoy cocktails - which more often than not ends up being cocktails for the ladies and beer for the guys. Unfortunately, our weather is starting to turn, and the evenings are starting to cool. Sadly, the summer days of cocktails at sunset are strictly numbered and will soon be replaced by coffee indoors near a warm wood fire. :(
